In Northeastern Colorado, the Pawnee Buttes loom over the Pawnee National Grasslands. The wind farms and natural gas structures impinge on the otherwise sense of solitude. To reach the buttes, we climbed over a rugged bluff on a narrow footpath that winds around the rocks. The views are stunning, but it is a long journey to get there and with so many spectacular places in Colorado, it’s easy to see why it fails to draw many visitors.Â
A meal beforehand at Johnson’s Corner is a must, and avoid the speed-trap town of Eaton. On a desolate Sunday night on Highway 85, I was ticketed with a hefty fine, which put a damper on an otherwise nice hike.
